Artist Statement
My artistic practice revolves around the concept of transformation and the dissolution of boundaries between different life forms. I find inspiration in the movement and flow of water, using it as a metaphor to convey this idea. Just as my paintings are guided by the fluidity of the materials, my sculptures begin with a specific form and then evolve into something else entirely, blurring the lines between plant, animal, and human shapes, as well as between liquids and solids.
My work spans a variety of styles, from figurative to abstract, and utilizes multiple mediums. I explore the intersection of science, art, and spirituality, drawing inspiration from esoteric philosophies like Kundalini yoga, which emphasizes using the physical to reach new states of consciousness through meditation.
In my abstract drawings, I use pen, ink, and colored pencil on mylar to investigate the connections between art, science, and spirituality. These drawings resemble imagined scientific illustrations of organisms, merging elements of plant, human, and animal forms. Through this work, I explore concepts of evolution and envision the potential forms life could take on other planets. I am also fascinated by the concept of the "sublime," an experience that pushes the boundaries of the conscious mind and prompts exploration of the unconscious—the underlying mechanisms of the body we are unaware of and the conditioning from childhood that shapes our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
My aesthetic is influenced by the intricate and ornate works of artists like Ernst Haeckel and the fairy tale illustrations of my Eastern European childhood. This influence is evident in my figurative watercolor pieces, which feature delicate and transparent layering techniques that create a sense of presence while remaining elusive and ethereal.
In my sculptural practice, I strive to incorporate the ornate aesthetics of the Baroque and Art Nouveau movements, placing a special emphasis on the decorative as a powerful symbol of femininity. Moreover, my sculptural pieces and abstract drawings draw inspiration from the realm of science, referencing the concept of a "hybrid" formed through the amalgamation of traditionally distinct life forms.
